Title: NFL Playoffs!
Post by: OmegaTrad on January 15, 2018, 09:52:38 AM
Some crazy games this weekend!  Jacksonville schlocked Pittsburgh, and Saints choked late. Anyone following it?  Any predictions or hopes?

Given that there is no chance Green Bay will be in the Super Bowl, I'm in a good mood.

I'm guessing we'll see yet another Patriots Super Bowl victory, but I would not mind being proven wrong!

Saints choked?  Granted, I didn't watch the whole game, but given they fought back from a 16-0 deficit, I don't think I would call that choking.  I think both teams were equally shocked by that last play.

I've watched the Vikings my whole life.  I was eight when Gary Anderson missed that field goal.  I remember the 41-0 NFC Championship loss, Brett Favre throwing across his body, Blair Walsh becoming a case study against the Seahawks, etc.

I've never seen anything like yesterday in my entire life, not with that team.  Unreal.  Still processing it.

What about the Jaguars, though?!  Even though they manhandled the Steelers earlier this year, how on earth do they score 45?!  And they gave up 42, even though their defense is supposed to be top notch.  Confusing team!  Can they give New England a run for their money?

Joe Buck's call wasn't too bad, but what makes it is the genuineness of the excitement, which I suppose anyone could pull off.  Buck isn't a very creative play-by-play guy, and IMO it's creativity that sets the best apart (e.g. Costas and Scully).

But Paul Allen (local radio guy) had the call of a lifetime here, pretty exciting:

This is also a really cool shot; no play by play, just a pylon angle of the play and what makes it is the crowd-- going from dead silent to a deafening elation in the blink of an eye.

I heard Skip Bayless (I think) compare Williams #43 to Bill Buckner.  So true!  Young and talented so maybe he can overcome it but greater guys were permanently broken by such events.  He not only failed to make an easy tackle but he took out the only other Saints player who had a chance to make a tackle.  All because he thought it was more important to keep the receiver in bounds than to just make sure he was tackled.  So what if he goes out of bounds with a second left on the clock?  Vikings still have to make a 50 yard field goal.  Give the Vikings credit, they fought hard until the very last play was finished.  They didn’t care if it was impossible to win.  They kept playing and they put themselves in position to take advantage of any mistake made by the Saints.  Good job!

Yes, should be a good game.  Jags match up well with Pats.  Not sure they will solve Gronk but the Pats have quite a few offensive weapons.  Everyone is focused on Jags D vs Pats O but how did Jags O put up 45 against Steelers?  That could be the real wildcard.  If the Pats figure out how to shutdown Bortles then Brady only has to put up a few points.  I think this game is hard to predict.

I’ll be surprised if Vikings beat Eagles but after what happened last weekend, who knows?

Yup.

And I think it was Shannon Sharpe made the latter point. Let them catch it, they still have so much that needs to go right: the snap, the hold, the kick itself, with an unproven kicker on a team that has an enduring history of choking on such kicks.

If they lose, it'll be bcause they looked past them. Otherwise it is a very winnable game for the purple team.

By the same token, they let Big Ben pass for almost 500 yards and gave up 42-- so much for defense.  And Pittsburgh's defensive gaffes are on Tomlin, and you can he assured Belicheck won't fail like Tomlin did. I personally don't think it'll be close. ~30-~17, Pats.  And one of those touchdowns will be garbage time.

The Vikings came back to earth and did exactly what I expected.

Go Pats.  I was somewhat dreading the Vikings making the Superbowl, since it would pit me against Tom Brady.  Now I can unabashedly cheer for Brady and Belickeck come Superbowl.

Well, it's not like I can root for the Eagles.

But Brady's the GOAT.  What's not to love?  Go Pats!!!!

Did the Vikings forget to look forward to their next game?  Yeah the final play of the NO game was off the charts great but you play to win Super Bowls.  Too bad.  Everything was lining up great for them.  It reminds me of the Red Sox and the Cubs.  Eagles are a very good team and Nick Foles is playing out of his mind.  If he keeps that going through the insanity of the SB hype, they could very well win it.  The Pats are not a dominating team but they find ways to take away your best weapon and make you beat them with your second best weapon.  Should be a close game.  6.5 points line is crazy.  Who bet they would beat the Jags by 9.5?  What are you nuts?

Yes the Jags “solved” Gronk.

Prediction time:  If the game is close, that is, neither team is able to build a three score advantage, the Patriots will win.  If the game is lopsided, the Eagles will win.

I tried to attach a short 4 second video about why 2Vermont is wrong about the Patriots, but the forum would not allow the attachment.

Eagles have to beat Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and the officiating crew. Remember last year when the Patriots got to within one score of the Falcons and the flags began to fly!

I just saw a picture of the stadium in Minneapolis where the Super Bowl is going to be played.

Is that an ugly stadium, or what?  It looks like it could be a Novus Ordo church!!!

It reminds me of the Crystal Cathedral...which was purchased by the Novus Ordo, no?

I changed my mind about the Superbowl. I previously planned to not watch any football games this year including the Superbowl. But now I plan on watching this one game, except for the halftime show. And we are having buffalo wings during the game. So I am treating this like Fat Tuesday. The only thing missing is beer. Perhaps I will have a beer on Fat Tuesday before the fast begins.

Of course, it would have been a completely different game had the replay officials invalidated the two scores that they would have undoubtedly invalidated during the regular season.  So, even after being spotted two touchdowns, it was a close game.
